Hydroponics and Aquaponics at BHS

The AgriScience class and the APBiology class at BHS are partnering in an experimental trial to grow food sources in a more environmentally friendly manner without the use of chemicals or even soil. Hydroponics (growing plants in water) and Aquaponics (growing plants and fish together) are not new topics, but not many high school students have the opportunity to observe and participate in these farming practices right in their classrooms. Mr. Jared Beasley has created a 4 feet by 8 feet float pond using dense foam board to hydroponically grow various leafy greens in his greenhouse. Mr. DeVaughn has a 100 gallon aquarium and is raising 20 blue talapia with duckweed, water hyacinth, and water lettuce growing on the surface and Romaine lettuce growing on a foamboard float. Both classes are focusing on the nutrients provided and how they cycle through the water, plants, and fish to create an ideal growing environment. Right now, we are not sure how well this will work out, but hopefully students will see that agriculture can be carried out in unconventional manners yet yield successful, environmentally friendly products.

"The Promise" was fulfilled with a 4th Consecutive State Championship trophy

The Booneville High School Marching Blue Devil Band is the 2016 MSHAA 3A State Marching Champion. All of the hard work put in from July's band camp until now has paid off once again. This year's senior class has enjoyed success like no group before. The band won 3 consecutive championships from 2009-2011, but fell just short in 2012. However, Booneville has been at the top since 2013. The top 5 bands in the finals are normally separated by a few tenths of a point. Booneville scored an 87.425, topping this year's second place band by about 8 points. No one involved is ready to rest on laurels, though. Talk has already begun as to next year and how continued improvement can be pursued. After all, the BBDB has a half century record of superior ratings and an extended band family that continues to be supportive and encouraging. Often being heard shouting "Go Big Blue", the fans know it's always "A Great Day to be a Blue Devil !"

Blue Devil Football History Blue Devil Football

An interesting discussion with Mr. Marshall Dickerson about ten years ago peaked my interest in the histroy of the Booneville Blue Devil Football program. Mr. Dickerson and I talked about the school colors and the mascot, focusing on when the school started the football program and when the team was first called the Blue Devils. He had already done some investigation and knew that the Blue Devil mascot was first used in the 1944 fottball season. I took that knowledge to the George E. Allen Library and began my search through the microfilm reels of the Booneville Independet newspaper, currently known as the Banner Independent.
