March 26, 2020
Dear Blue Devil Family,
I want to take this opportunity to thank you for all of your support during this unique time. Our schools and community will emerge from this event stronger than ever. “Together We’re Better” is a way of life for our community during these unpredictable times. Parental and community involvement is what makes our district a state-wide educational leader. Since you are our partner in education, I wanted to give you an update on what was learned today from the Mississippi State Board of Education meeting.
The state board voted to not waive graduation requirements, but rather allow local boards to modify those requirements for the 2019-2020 school year. We are still working on what those requirements will look like. However, no student will be held responsible for any coursework, except Dual Enrollment/Dual Credit, from March 16, 2020 through April 17, 2020 for promotion/retention/graduation purposes. This also includes classes required for graduation. The principals and I will work on promotion/retention questions before the next board meeting on April 14th. It is my intent to recommend a student-friendly graduation requirement policy to the school board. More details will be forthcoming.
Some of the things that have been waived by the state board for the 2019-2020 school year:
- Subject Area Testing (SATP) at the high school
- MAAP testing
- MKAS testing (pre-K and Kindergarten)
- 3rd Grade Literacy Based Promotion Act testing
- Accountability ratings
This is a dynamically fluid situation. I will share more information as it becomes available.
Thank you for your amazing support of your school district!!
